HertsLynx, the innovative on-demand bus service operated by Hertfordshire County Council across north and east Hertfordshire, has reached an impressive milestone —surpassing 100,000 passenger trips since its launch in September 2021. Powered by Padam Mobility’s on-demand platform, the service provides a flexible alternative to conventional bus routes, allowing passengers to book rides without depending on fixed schedules or pre-determined routes.

Unlike traditional bus services, HertsLynx offers passengers the freedom to choose when and where they wish to travel. By using the HertsLynx app, booking website, or a dedicated service hotline, passengers can easily select both their pick-up and drop-off points within designated service zones. This dynamic approach to public transport has significantly improved travel options between rural villages and larger town centres, making daily commutes, shopping trips, and appointments more accessible.

Since its introduction, HertsLynx has seen steady growth, now averaging 5,500 trips each month. The service has become an integral part of life for many Hertfordshire residents. For instance, Gemma from Standon uses the service almost daily, describing it as her "magic bus" that makes everyday tasks—from shopping to visiting friends—seamless. Simon from Ardley, who is partially sighted, relies on HertsLynx for commuting and praises the service for the independence it has given him, along with saving significant costs on taxis.

HertsLynx was launched as part of Hertfordshire County Council’s broader strategy to enhance rural transport links, with initial support from the UK’s Rural Mobility Fund. It also forms a critical component of the County's £29.7 million Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP), which aims to make public transport more accessible, flexible, and user-friendly for residents.

BSIP funding together with the high level of demand contributed to the decision to expand the service area, extending it to include the Dacorum region. The integration of towns such as Berkhamsted, Hemel Hempstead, and Tring, as well as their surrounding villages, has further enhanced the transport network, providing rural residents with vital links to employment, education, healthcare, and leisure activities.

HertsLynx continues to play a crucial role in transforming transportation across rural Hertfordshire. By offering a cost-effective, convenient, and environmentally friendly alternative to personal vehicles and taxis, the service is helping residents stay connected and easing the challenges of rural mobility.
